Local work experience grows tech ambitions...
Thu, 4th Sep 2014
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Grow Wellington and Summer of Tech are working together to connect students with local technology companies.

The initiative offers CV clinics, work site visits and boot camps throughout the year and an internship programme over the summer break.

This year’s programme offers even more options for students wanting to work in the tech sector, with the inclusion of manufacturing companies looking to incorporate technology into their products.

“I’m interested in bionics and robotics and fine detail control systems,” Alice Lawn, one of 18 participating students from Victoria University and WelTec, says. She is currently studying science, electronics and computer systems at Victoria University.

“A lot of that type of work is developed overseas but I want to work for a New Zealand company and make that happen here.”

Recently students experienced a tour of Fraser Engineering, Metco Engineering and Tekron International in Lower Hutt. Students were able to observe and experience a range of work, from outfitting fire engines to developing GPS systems.

Grow Wellington has been working with The Summer of Tech initiative since it was established in 2006.  The majority of students taking part are from Victoria and Massey universities, WelTec, Whitireia, and Yoobee.

Students selected as interns work on 10-week projects from November to February. Traditionally the projects have been in software development, however companies are increasingly offering experiences in mobile and web development, testing, support, analytics, business analysis and design.

Lawn encourages other female students to consider careers in engineering.

“Sometimes girls don’t think they have the software and electronic skills but you build these up with time, anyone can do it if they persevere.”
