2degrees gets network back on track for earthquake affected areas

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck near Hamner Springs in the early hours of Monday morning has taken a massive toll on New Zealand.

Since the initial quake, there have been two confirmed deaths, reportedly more than 20 injuries and more than 1400 aftershocks.

While Kaikoura is still cut off from the rest of the country, 2degrees has announced that its mobile voice and sms service has largely been restored.

However, in quake impacted zones like Kaikoura, the restoration isn’t at full capacity. The telco has advised that techs are continuously working to get it sorted.

For 2degrees broadband and fixed line, the telco is working with network partner chorus to get everything back up and running and people in Kaikoura are also able to connect to the 2degrees/Canterbury District Health Board enabled wi-fi at the hospital. 

This is currently the only wi-fi access available in the area and is powered by a wireless backhaul link to Christchurch.

At this stage, the majority of 2degrees stores are now open, apart from the Queensgate Mall store in Lower Hutt and the store in Blenheim.  

“2degrees is very happy with the progress that has been made to restore mobile services and our ability to assist people in Kaikoura through the wi-fi option at the hospital,” a company statement read.

“We are optimistic about restoring fixed line and broadband services in Kaikoura in the short term and continue to work with our network partners on this."
