Alcatel-Lucent shows off potential of LTE

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Developers and telecommunications stakeholders have been invited to attend a showcase demonstrating the power of next-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless technology, hosted by Alcatel-Lucent.

Presented in Auckland in conjunction with Telecom, the showcase features nine devices and apps showing off the potential of the new technology. Most were developed overseas, where the technology is already being introduced, although one, a personalised instant-replay app designed for use at sports events, was developed here in New Zealand.

Other tools include a table-top screen, which is controlled via mobile phone and could be used by patrons in bars and restaurants to play games, watch videos or listen to music, and an instant image upload, which lets photographers save photos straight to the cloud and publish them online almost instantaneously.

Alcatel-Lucent is a founding member of the ng Connect Program, a consortium of industry organisations working to make the most of the new technology, facilitating the applications but also making sure there are profitable business models in which to release them.

Richard Fraser, Alcatel-Lucent VP solutions and strategy for NZ & the Pacific Islands, says the best time to view the showcase will be at the New Zealand launch of the ng Connect Program, on October 19.

"It’s time to start thinking about what LTE can bring,” Fraser says.
