Apple recalls 2015 MacBook Pros because they could catch fire

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Apple has issued a worldwide recall of older MacBook Pros, due to serious battery overheating and fire risks.

The affected model is the MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina Display. They were mainly sold new between September 2015 and September 2017. No other models are affected by the recall.

Anyone who has purchased a secondhand MacBook Pro at any time since 2015 should also check to see if their device is affected.

While Apple isn't being too forthcoming about why the battery in this model is a fire hazard, the company says that people should stop using the affected devices immediately.

Users can find out their model number by doing the following:

“About This Mac from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. If you have "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015),'' enter your computer's serial number on the program page to see if it is eligible for a battery replacement.

Users can also find their serial number printed on the underside of the Mac, and on the original packaging next to the barcode.

Apple says it will replace all eligible devices with affected batteries free of charge, however the MacBook Pro will need to be sent to an Apple Repair Centre for up to two weeks.

“Your MacBook Pro will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program. Service may take 1-2 weeks.

Users can go to an Apple Authorised Service Provider; make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store; or contact Apple Support to arrange mail-in service via the Apple Repair Centre.

Apple says users should back up their data before sending their device away for service.

"This worldwide Apple program doesn't extend the standard warranty coverage of the 15-inch MacBook Pro,” Apple adds.

“This program does not affect your statutory or warranty rights.
