Apple's AirPods now come with 'Hey Siri' functionality
Thu, 21st Mar 2019
FYI, this story is more than a year old

In the next of this week's series of Apple announcements, the somewhat controversial (yet now widely accepted) AirPods are next in line.

Now when you wear the AirPods you can say “Hey Siri”. Siri will helpfully change the song, make a call, adjust the volume, or give you directions.

The AirPods feature an Apple-designed H1 chip which, like many of Apple's other product announcements this week, is all about making things perform better.

“AirPods delivered a magical wireless experience and have become one of the most beloved products we've ever made. They connect easily with all of your devices, and provide crystal clear sound and intuitive, innovative control of your music and audio,” comments Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller.

“The world's best wireless headphones just got even better with the new AirPods. They are powered by the new Apple-designed H1 chip which brings an extra hour of talk time, faster connections, hands-free ‘Hey Siri' and the convenience of a new wireless battery case.

According to Apple, the H1 chip delivers performance efficiencies, faster connect times, more talk time, and the convenience of hands-free. Its ‘custom audio architecture' also creates a revolutionary audio experience and improved synchronisation.

“H1 allows AirPods to deliver up to 50% more talk time compared to first generation AirPods. Switching between devices while listening to music on iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad is more seamless than ever with two times faster connect times.

The new AirPods come with a standard case or a Wireless Charging Case that holds additional charges for more than 24 hours of listening time.

The Wireless Charging Case are also compatible with Qi charging solutions – bonus if you've got one of those lying around.

“An LED light indicator located on the front of the case conveniently shows the charge status with just a glance. Existing AirPods customers can purchase the standalone Wireless Charging Case.

Starting from today, the second generation of AirPods are available for purchase online today, and expect to see them in Apple stores starting from next week.

You can even dish out a little more money for a personal engraving on your AirPods.

  • AirPods with standard charging case will be available for RRP NZ$279,
  • AirPods with Wireless Charging Case will be available for RRP NZ$349.
  • Customers can order the standalone Wireless Charging Case for RRP NZ$139.
