FYI, this story is more than a year old

Microsoft is about to begin its biggest assault on the business software market and hopes to take business away from SAP, Oracle and Salesforce.com.

Steve Ballmer’s comments to Reuters come as Microsoft shows off its new enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, which will soon make a move to the cloud.

"The opportunities to make a good business economically are wonderful," said the Microsoft Chief Executive. We're pretty pumped up."

IDC predicts that companies will spend $118 billion a year worldwide on enterprise applications but Ballmer wouldn’t give a target percentage figure Microsoft is aiming to win.

"If we don't dramatically outgrow Oracle and SAP I'd be disappointed," Ballmer said.

Reuters says that Microsoft is currently a distant fifth in the market, behind SAP, Oracle, Sage Group Plc and Infor Global Solutions.
